Back by popular demand, we welcome back Chris Balfour from Age UK Northumberland, to deliver the latest information on Scams we encounter everyday and how to protect ourselves against them.  This talk explores the relevance of scams and delivers an awareness-raising discussion to provide information on how to spot and avoid different types of scams.

Our speaker this month is Jude Sellen Cole, who is creating an Urban Physic Garden for wellbeing at Bensham Grove.  Plants and medicine, gardening and healing have long been entwined.  Urban environments can be busy, stressful, hard at times.  An Urban Physic garden offers a place to slow down.  A place for plants, creative arts and science to merge.  A safe place to nurture our plant kin and ourselves.

We were pleased to be joined by Peter from Baliffgate Museum, who entertained us with historical incidents from the development of Alnwick to present day. Describing what we know, and what we don’t know, about the origins of the town. Covering some more important events that have influenced how the town developed.

​The Tudor dynasty, taking a cheeky look at Tudor Fashion

​We are joined this month by Jane Mann from Baliffgate Museum.  Jane will give a lively and entertaining talk on the Tudor dynasty (1485 to 1603) as well as Tudor Fashion. 
To put this into perspective, a residency on the site of Kirkely Hall spanned the time of the Tudors.  The manor of Kirkley was granted to the de Eure family in 1267, and Sir William Eure was recorded as in occupation of a tower house there in 1415. Henry Ogle of Kirkley (1525–1580), grandson of the 3rd Baron Ogle held lands at Kirkley, near Whalton, Northumberland under Lord Eure.
His sons Mark and Cuthbert (1569–1655) each bought a part of the Manor from Lord Eure around 1612. In 1632, Cuthbert built the manor Kirkley Hall, close to the site of the old house.

The Friends really enjoyed our Christmas Meal at Kirkley Hall.  The afternoon was filled with fabulous locally sourced food, great company, a presentation of all awards the Friends have made during the year ended 31 July 2023, a quiz, crackers, and mince pies.
