Edinburgh Zoo visit - May 2019
As part of their course, students from the level 3 Animal Management programme at Northumberland College, Kirkley Hall were able to attend an end of year educational visit to Edinburgh Zoo on Wednesday 15th May. The students have all successfully completed a two year extended programme at the college.
They have studied a pathway which focuses on exotic animals, zoo collections and the conservation of endangered species. The trip was a lovely ‘send off’ and reward for their hard work and efforts throughout their course.
The students gained a lot from the visit. Edinburgh Zoo is a well renowned and prestigious collection which partakes in a range of conservation projects and breeding programmes. Learners were able to look around the displays, read interpretation signs, listen to talks and get involved with encounters and workshop sessions. Our education session focused on the role of the modern day zoo.

The trip to Edinburgh Zoo was a great opportunity to see certain animals that are not common in many other zoos. This included the Giant Panda and Koala bear. Without this trip I may have never seen these species in my life except for on TV. Thank you Friends of Kirkley Hall for funding this trip and allowing me to see these beautiful animals.

I really enjoyed the trip to Edinburgh Zoo on the 15th of May, my personal favourite part was being able to see the Chimpanzees as I find them interesting because they are so closely related to humans. From this trip I have learnt about the different responsibilities and jobs in zoos.
I would like to say a massive thank you to the Friends of Kirkley Hall for their contribution to get us to the zoo,it is greatly appreciated by us all.

The end of year trip to Edinburgh Zoo has been beneficial to my studies as it gave me more knowledge on what the purpose of the modern day zoo and the role of zoos in the future. Not only do zoos conduct research on site but they also partake in in-situ conservation and research in different counties to help maintain the population of endangered animals in the wild. This also showed that Edinburgh Zoo are 100% dedicated to maintaining animals both in captivity as well as in the animal’s natural habitat.
